Spedale del Ceppo Museum
The Museo dello Spedale del Ceppo in Pistoia is a remarkable institution housed in the historic hospital complex founded in 1277. This museum offers a deep dive into the history of healthcare in Pistoia, with exhibits showcasing a rich collection of surgical instruments, medical history, and biographies of notable doctors who contributed to the hospital’s legacy.
One of the museum’s highlights is the stunning Della Robbia frieze, a Renaissance masterpiece in polychrome glazed terracotta adorning the external loggia. Visitors can also explore the 18th-century anatomical theater, a testament to the medical-surgical school active since the 17th century.
Additionally, the museum tour includes the former men’s ward of San Jacopo and other historical areas, making it a comprehensive journey through centuries of medical advancements and architectural beauty. While the nearby Hemodialysis Pavilion, featuring contemporary art by renowned artists, remains in use and is not open to the public, it represents a significant cultural addition to the complex.
