Exploring the Ghiacciaia della Madonnina at the Ecomuseo Montagna Pistoiese
The Ecomuseo Montagna Pistoiese offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical practice of ice production with the Ghiacciaia della Madonnina. Located near Le Piastre, this icehouse showcases the ingenuity of past communities in preserving ice using natural methods.
The Ghiacciaia della Madonnina is part of an extensive ice production network that thrived from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. This unique structure, with its conical shape and straw-covered roof, was used to store and preserve natural ice harvested from the nearby Reno River. The ice was collected during winter and kept cool through the summer months.
Visitors can explore the icehouse and learn about the process of ice harvesting and storage. The Ecomuseo also features a dedicated educational trail, the Sentiero della Ghiacciaia, which stretches for 9 kilometers and connects Le Piastre to Pontepetri. This trail includes informative signage and offers a scenic hike through the area’s beautiful landscapes, highlighting the historical ice production sites. The Sentiero della Ghiacciaia is open for self-guided tours or with a guide. Proper mountain hiking attire is recommended.
